Stained glass crow

project

Our assignment was to create a composite image made up of 3 separately photographed images. I first began by brainstorming the concept for my image and planning the look, locations and potential image elements. Brainstorming possible locations and the consideration of the Marine Building led to final concept.

concept

The Marine building is a 1930’s skyscraper, located in Vancouver, which is listed as one of the most beautiful Art Deco buildings in the world. My consideration of this location led to the idea of creating an Art Nouveau style portrait poster. My sister agreed to be the main focal point model and I began planning for the styling and thinking of a third element to include.

headpiece

As this image was intended to convey a historical period, costume was especially important. I researched early 20th century photography and advertising posters and found that almost all models wore extravagant headpieces. I make jewelry as a hobby and was excited to combine some of my other interests into this project, so I decided to make my headpiece for the photoshoot with my sister.

Crows

I have a lot of wild animal friends who visit me in my garden, including some very intelligent crows. While working on the piece, my favourite crow, "Crowseph" brought me his fledgling baby. I was able to take some great photographs of the baby and decided to include one in this project.
The crow family stayed with me until winter and I got to experience the little guy fly for the first time and eventually grow up!
