The goal of this project was to use Adobe Illustrator to create a branding guide and mock up screens for a fictional app.. My own personal challenge was to utilize a range of illustrator effects and tricks instead of solely rely on drawing skills. This project was created for the final term project in an Illustrator course during my time in BCIT’s New Media Program.

Lullaby is a minimalist sleep and nature sounds app with a simple interface that allows sleepy users to quickly find the content they need before dozing off. With it’s straightforward interface and aesthetic illustrated design, Lullaby is suitable for adults as well as children.

The process for creating the Lullaby app was quite different than any other project I had done. I would usually start a similar project by creating the branding elements but for Lullaby, I started with landscape illustrations. This turned out to be ideal, because the end of the second term was incredibly stressful and rushed. Starting with the illustrations early allowed me more time to experiment with different illustrator techniques and leave the more straightforward task of branding at the end.
To create the landscape illustrations and branding elements for Lullaby, I experimented with a wide range of Illustrator effects. This project was a great opportunity to learn new techniques I hadn’t previously considered.
- 3D Materials (moons, mountains)
- Artistic Effects (ripples, sunlight)
- Blending modes & Gradients
- Stamps (snow & stars)
- Motion blur (Auroras)

The project deliverables included:
- a fully illustrated app with 4 serene landscape illustrations
- a navigation menu and audio player.
- A realistic, 3d phone mockup to display app screens.
- small branding guide
- a presentation detailing the app concept and techniques used.
